Today’s story is about a man who just can’t lose with the ladies. Is it his charm? Or something more devilish? Find out in “Lover” by Doug Hawley.

Lover
by Doug Hawley

Jason was a hero to all of the men at the insurance agency where he worked and the recreational softball team, the Softies, for whom he pitched. Some women acted as an informal public relations team for him. Like Warren Beatty in his younger years, Jason was considered a prime conquest for women. Those that he romanced always fell in bed with him, and they never regretted it. The appeal was a mystery – average looks, intelligence and money. There was nothing outstanding about him to explain his success. When asked how he did it, he would explain “It’s my smile” or “A pact with the devil”.
After the Softies won their game on Sunday, the rest of the team congratulated Jason and asked him what his games were for the rest of the week “Well there’s Cindi my orthodontist on Monday. I’ll need to take Tuesday off to recover from Cindi before I go out with Xenia, the model, on Wednesday, followed by another day of rest, and culminating with the best of the week on Friday, Lily, an acrobat with a nightclub act. I can hardly wait for Friday.”
Both Cindi and Xenia were beautiful, adventuresome, and good company, but Jason didn’t have his head in the game with them, in more ways than one. His mind was on Lily, anticipating her moves. She had Friday off from the night club where she performed, so he picked her up at 8PM from her house. One of Jason’s girlfriends had set them up as a gift to Lily.
Lily asked, “Where are we going tonight?”
“I’d rather get right to it. I’m taking you home to my bed. No reason to waste time.”
“OK, I know your reputation, but you think it will be that easy with no preliminaries? No dinner or movie? Maybe I’m the one that won’t be so easy for you.”
Jason looked over at her and smiled. “Yes, it will be that easy.”
     Lily robotically answered, “OK”.
After a couple hours of mutually pleasurable activity, both were ready for sleep. Before Jason fell to sleep, Lily whispered to him, “My full name is Lilith.”
Around midnight Jason woke up and noticed he was in bed alone. He was surprised to hear a voice from above. “It’s time”.
He turned on the light and looked up. A monster attached to the ceiling by long talons was facing him. Giant breasts and stomach hung down from a spindly body. Despite the monster’s appearance, the voice and tattoos identified the beast as Lily. Lily-Monster said, “Per your agreement with my master, you have had one thousand women and now your soul belongs to Satan, AKA the Devil.”
With that, she dropped on him.
The autopsy said Jason died of a heart attack. The bruises on his body were insufficient to cause death. Because he obviously had sex that night, there was a widespread search for Lily who might shed light on his death. It was unsuccessful. Her friends knew nothing about her, and nothing documented her existence.
